How much fragrance oil do candles need?
Fragrance load is expressed as a percentage of the wax weight. Most container candles use between 6% and 10%. The right number depends on your wax's maximum recommended load and how strong you want the scent throw to be. Adding more oil than the wax can hold does not make a stronger candle—it causes leaching and burn problems.
Work forward or backward
Use Wax → Oil when you know how much wax you are melting and want the exact oil weight. Use Oil → Wax when you have a fixed bottle of fragrance and want to know how much wax it will scent at your chosen load. The Total → Split mode divides a finished pour weight into its wax and oil components.

Frequently asked questions
- How much fragrance oil per pound of wax?
- At a 6% fragrance load, one pound of wax (454 g) takes about 27 g of fragrance oil. At 8% it is about 36 g, and at 10% about 45 g. Always check your wax's maximum recommended load.
- Is fragrance load based on wax weight or total weight?
- Meltmetric calculates fragrance load as a percentage of the wax weight, which is the most common convention among suppliers. The fragrance oil is added on top of the wax, so total weight is wax plus fragrance.
- Can I add too much fragrance oil?
- Yes. Exceeding your wax's maximum load can cause the oil to seep out (leaching), poor burn performance, and safety issues. Stay at or below the manufacturer's recommended maximum.
