How Meltmetric Calculates
Fragrance load convention
Meltmetric defines fragrance load as fragrance oil weight ÷ wax weight, expressed as a percentage. This is the most common convention among fragrance and wax suppliers. Because the oil is added on top of the wax, the finished mixture weighs wax plus fragrance.
- Fragrance from wax: fragrance = wax × load
- Wax from total: wax = total ÷ (1 + load); fragrance = total − wax
- Wax capacity from oil: wax = oil ÷ load; total = wax + oil
Batch scaling
For a batch, the per-candle fill weight is multiplied by the candle count before the fragrance split and waste allowance are applied. This keeps per-candle and batch results perfectly consistent.
Waste allowance
Wax and fragrance cling to your pouring pitcher, thermometer and utensils. The optional waste allowance (default 5%) scales up the wax and fragrance you should prepare so you do not come up short. It never changes the finished candle's composition — only how much you melt.
Default fragrance load
The default load is 8%, a common midpoint. This is a starting point, not a recommendation for your specific wax. A neutral warning appears at high loads reminding you to check your manufacturer's maximum. Meltmetric never asserts that a given load is safe for a given wax.
Unit conversions
All conversions use exact factors. One ounce (avoirdupois) is 28.349523125 g and one pound is 453.59237 g. Results can be displayed in grams or ounces without changing the underlying quantity — the toggle only reformats the same value.
Volume estimates are clearly labeled
Any feature that starts from a vessel's fluid capacity (rather than a weighed fill) is an estimate. It uses one US fluid ounce = 29.5735 ml, a water-weight reference, an approximate wax density, and a typical fill fraction. Densities vary by wax and temperature, so these results are labeled as estimates wherever they appear. For accuracy, weigh water in your actual vessel and use that as the fill weight.
Rounding
Calculations are performed at full precision and only rounded for display. This avoids the compounding errors that occur when intermediate values are rounded too early.
